Media Institutions

Marketing:
It’s easier for people to get there media product ‘out there’ as technology has grown.
Social networking is becoming really popular for doing this, most bands and artists advertise themselves via Facebook and Myspace, by advertising themselves through social networking sites, people can actually send the link anywhere to help promote the band/artist for other people to listen to them.

Institution:
Global patterns of ownership are always changing so the concept of 'institution' does too. Media ownership is now in the hands of a few companies worldwide, the companies own examples of many different media. Basically, understanding institution is about understanding:
  • who produces media texts
  • what their set of codes and values is
  • and their relationship to us as individuals
The main global companies are:
  • Sony
  • Disney
  • Time Warner
MTV

iTunes is an online media player computer programme that lets its users legally download, organise, play and save music. iTunes was first released in 2001, since then it has become the most popular place to get music through the iTunes store where users can also download podcasts, audiobooks, iPod games, television shows

Spotify is another online media player, a little different to iTunes however, you can still download music legally but Spotify lets you access music and play the full songs, lets you subscribe to other users playlists and favourite songs so you have them saved on your home screen.
